Obituary of John Anthony Mumbach
Mumbach- John Anthony
1930-2024
John Anthony Mumbach of Hamburg, born July 7, 1930, peacefully passed away on February 21, 2024. He was 93 years old and is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Roseann G. Mumbach and their nine children Lee Ann, Christopher, Mary Jo (Daniel Duggan), Joseph (Kimberly), Luke, Martha, Benjamin (Jenny), Sarah (Justin Takas), Jennifer (Patrick Reagan). He leaves behind a lasting legacy through his nine children, twenty grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was the cherished brother of Peter Mumbach and sister-in-law of Sandy Mumbach, and his extended family includes numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and inlaws.
He lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service to others. A graduate of Canisius College, John was the former owner of East Main Street Liquor and Wine and later retired from the United States Postal Service. John dedicated 28 years of his life as a proud and committed member of the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department and inspired his nephews to become firefighters. His community spirit extended beyond first aid calls and firefighting, as he was an active participant in the Ride for Roswell and a loyal supporter of the SS Peter and Paul Parish Outreach Center. His heart for service extended to volunteering to read for the blind and driving the senior citizens' van during his retirement, demonstrating his compassion and kindness.
John quietly and consistently contributed to his community, offering his support to those in need. He cherished family and provided unwavering support and a soft landing spot for friends, family, and strangers. John's commitment to family extended to his role as a grandfather and great-grandfather, where he found immense joy in attending their activities and sharing moments together.
An avid reader, John frequented the Hamburg Public Library. Together with his wife Roseann, he traveled extensively, creating cherished memories with family and friends. John took pleasure in the simple joys of life, whether it was taking 40 laps on the front porch, sharing cookies with young visitors, or delivering a timely and often humorous bad joke in any situation.
True to his character, John had a daily ritual of reading the newspaper, jokingly announcing that he was just checking to ensure he wasn't in the obituaries. Now, we can fondly say, "Dad, you made it!"
John was cared for in his home by his family and in his final week supported by the compassionate and extraordinary care of the Hospice team that became family.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Monday, February 26, from 3PM to 7PM at Demmerley Funeral Homes, 21 Pierce Ave., Hamburg, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM on Tuesday, February 27, at SS Peter and Paul Church, 66 East Main St. in Hamburg, NY. In place of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice Buffalo and SS Peter & Paul Parish Outreach Center in honor of his memory. John will be dearly missed but forever remembered for his sense of humor, generosity, kindness, and unwavering love for others. May he rest in peace.
