   Dr. Howard L. Stoll, Jr., a retired dermatologist died October 18, 2022 at his home in Hamburg, N.Y.

   Born in Buffalo and raised in Little Valley, NY, he graduated from Little Valley Central School in 1945, Harvard University in 1948, University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1952 and the Dermatology Residency Program of the University of Buffalo Medical School in 1958.

   He was a Captain in the United States Army as the dermatologist at Fort Jackson South Carolina from 1955 until 1957.

   Dr. Stoll was a dermatologist at Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1958 until 2008 where he was Chief of the Dermatology Department part of the time.  He was a Professor of Dermatology at the Medical School and a Professor of Oncology at Roswell Park Memorial Institute.  Dr. Stoll directed the management of patients, taught dermatology residents and was particularly active in research and publications of the skin, especially Cutaneous Lymphoma.  Dr. Stoll published over sixty articles and several book chapters.  He also maintained a part time private practice in Hamburg.

   Dr. Stoll was a member and officer in several local, state, national and international medical and dermatological societies.

   Dr. Stoll was particularly interested in history including the cosmology of our universe, the history of Western civilization and the history and development of colonial America and the early United States.  He completed the eight-year program at the University of Chicago Great Books exploring the most frequently recurring ideas in Western civilization.  His prominent characteristics were inquisitiveness and peacefulness.  He was interested in the multifactorial causes of events, the debate between determinism versus free will choice and the cultural rather than divine cause of morality.

   Dr. Stoll was a member of The Willow Bend Tennis and Swim Club, Hamburg Indoor Tennis Club, Red Jacket and Sitzmarker Ski Clubs, The Buffalo Ski Club and the Springville Country Club.  He was active in skiing, tennis and golf.  He was a judge in the annual Buffalo in Bloom program for several years.  In 2000, he was a co-founder of Village in Bloom which became the Hamburg Garden Walk.  He co-founded the Hamburg Gentlemen’s Ski Club in 1963 which continued for over fifty years.
  Dr. Stoll had several personal interests.  He maintained flower gardens and indoor plants including bonsais and orchids.  His dahlias are legendary.

   Howard Stoll and Jacklyn Fay Straight met in second grade and became lifelong best friends.  They married in 1948.  They celebrated their 70^th wedding anniversary one month prior to Jackie’s death on July 23, 2018.  Their children are Shelley Fay Stoll, Margaret Leslie Beiting (Edward), Amy D. Stoll (Scott Billings), and Dr. Howard L. Stoll, III (Theresa).  Their grandchildren are Dana, Lydia, Christopher, Nathaniel and Gretchen.  Dr. Stoll is survived by one sibling, Sondra K. Corcoran, sister and brother-in-law, Dixon and Dorothy Stearns and several nieces and nephews.
